Finding a Place To Study

Figuring out a time and place to do your homework and study is of the utmost importance. Once you have figured out when to do your homework, the next question is where to do it.

A good study area should have a desk or table big enough to spread out books, notes, worksheets, etc. without them all being on top of each other. You do not want to make a mess, but you also do want to have ample room to work.

Make sure you have plenty of light. Ideally, you will near a window with an overhead light and perhaps even a small reading lamp.

Most important in choosing a study location is finding a place that is relatively free from distractions. That means no TV on in the room, no brothers or sisters running by, no phone conversations to listen in on, and no instant messenger or emails to keep you busy.

Whether or not you listen to music while you study depends on your personal preference. You may choose to ignore any phone calls, or turn off your cell phone, and forget about the urge to go and get a snack every ten or fifteen minutes.

Depending on your home, you may be able to find this area at the kitchen or dining room table, or in your bedroom. You may be able to set aside a study space in your basement or an office in you home. Some people find their homes too filled with distractions, and prefer to take their studies to the local library.

Wherever you choose, it is best if you can study in that same place all the time. If you can study in this same location consistently, your mind will get used to this being a focused and important place. When you enter this area, you will know it is time to get down to business. Your pens and pencils, paper, erasers, stapler, calculator, and anything else you use often can be kept nearby. Also, you can keep them in a bin or bag which can be pulled out whenever you need them. This will avoid having to stop studying to collect supplies.

Having this dedicated study spot will help you get down to business and focus more easily on getting your work complete.

Keep Supplies in a Homework Kit

It’s four o’clock…you know what that means…time to do homework. You scour the house looking for a pencil. Then you need a pencil sharpener. Ten minutes later you find one. Finally you sit down to start your homework. Where’s the calculator? Dad’s desk? Brother’s bedroom? Once found, you discover that it is low on batteries…there have to be some in the house…but where? If you find your typical study session unfolding like this, then here are a few suggestions to make you finish your homework with ease…

You can waste a lot of time looking for homework supplies and making sure they are ready to be used. OR, you can use a homework box or supply kit of some kind to keep it all together. Then, when it comes time to do homework, everything is in place for you. No running around, no scouring the house.

Any kind of box will do. You can use a storage tote, an old shoebox, or even a drawer. The key is to keep everything you need in there, ready to go. Make sure the tote or box is placed conveniently in your study area. It should not move from the spot.

Make sure siblings and family members know that these supplies are for homework, and not for other activities. Those supplies should stay there, and only be used for homework. You may want to label it so there is no confusion as to its purpose.

Pencils and crayons should be sharp, calculators fully equipped with fresh batteries, markers with lids tightly attached. Here’s a tip, since your parents are always offering to help with your homework but it is up to you to do the work, suggest that they take responsibility for keeping the supply kit full and in working order.
When it comes to studying, there are few people that want any more struggle or stress than is necessary. Keeping all materials and supplies handy and ready to go will make your studying not only go smoother, but possibly quicker. And who wouldn’t want to shorten the time they need for studying?

Concentration is Key

Learning to concentrate while studying and doing work is a skill that will be used for the rest of your life. The art of concentration is to eliminate any possible distractions and completely focus on the task at hand. Many students will read through material and discover that they have no idea what they have just read. Or, they will attend lectures and have difficulty paying attention to what is being said. Here are a few suggestions to help you stay focused and boost your grades…

When scheduling study times, try to stick to a consistent and efficient routine. Try to avoid studying one day late at night, and the next in the afternoon. Write in your planner or calendar when you will study so as not to have conflicts.

Always study in a quiet environment. If you haven’t already, find a designated study spot free of distractions. If you live in a noisy house or dormitory, this may mean heading to a study room or even the library.

When you need a study break, do something different from you have been doing, and in a different area. Get up and walk around in another room. Listen to music for a few minutes. Grab a snack. Try to take a break every hour for about 10 minutes.

Every student struggles with day dreaming while studying…thinking about plans for the night or tomorrow’s basketball game. To avoid daydreaming, ask yourself questions about the material as you study it, which will keep your mind focused.

If you have trouble focusing during classroom lectures, look over the notes of the previous lecture and read the course material pertaining to the lecture beforehand so you can anticipate the main ideas that the instructor will cover. Additionally, show outward interest during lectures. Have an attentive expression and posture. This will self-motivate internal interest. Also, resist distractions by sitting in front of the room away from disruptive occurrences and classmates and by focusing on the instructor through listening and note taking.

Just a few minor adjustments in your studying habits will go a long way in improving grades and concentration.

Skimming with Skill

Think about how you find a name in a telephone book. You don’t read any more than necessary to find the name. Maybe you use your finger to guide your eyes. This type of reading is known as scanning. Skimming uses the same type of skill mechanically but a different skill mentally. In scanning, you know what you are looking for; in skimming, you don’t.

Since you don’t know exactly what you are looking for while skimming, prepare yourself by reading the title, source, author, and any pictures; then question yourself,–who, what, when, where is this likely to focus on? With a questioning mind direct your eyes down the column of print, or in a zigzag, if the lines are quite long. Look for exact names of people, places, things, ideas, numbers and words like therefore, whenever, until, because, and instead, to clue you to how and why.

When you first start to learn to skim you may see only the words in bold type, italics, digits, or capitalized words. Soon you will note new or unusual vocabulary. As you become an efficient skimmer your span of perception will develop and your ability to make closure will increase.

Skimming is a step you should always take before you read any article of factual or practical narrative. You will soon be able to detect most important facts, strange vocabulary, and words that are clues to important relationships.

It’s a good practice to skim everything in mass media after reading the title and first paragraph. You may get all the information you want. This keeps your skimming skills from deteriorating, or will give you the practice you need to develop necessary skills.

Skim everything you intend to read before you make a final decision to read, discard, or study the material.

Skim all highlighting and develop a read-skim pattern to use for rapid review. And don’t overlook this! Reviewing frequently and rapidly is the best way to memorize (or simply remember information) from notes and long text assignments. Skimming is a very useful tool for studying, so learn it and use it!

From Start to Finish

Confused about what to write down in your notebook during class? Get stressed when preparing for tests and looking over your notes? Here are some suggestions to take you from the beginning of the studying process in the classroom, to the end, or the test itself.

Read assignments before heading to class. This will build your background for the information that will be presented in class. It helps you be familiar with the vocabulary and concepts. This is especially helpful if you are unfamiliar with the subject matter. As you read, underline and highlight important information. If you don’t have time to read the entire assignment, at least look over introduction paragraphs, bolded words, and summaries. This will give you a good overview of the information.

Although it seems obvious, you need to go to class and take notes. Most professors or teachers lecture during class periods, emphasizing points of importance. Head to class ready to be attentive and write during the entire class. Don’t stop taking notes until the lecturer is finishing. Pay particular attention to the end of the lecture, as professors will cram information into this part to finish up for the day. Use abbreviations; get details and main ideas to get complete notes.

While the notes are still ‘fresh’ in your mind, look over them and make any additions or corrections as soon as possible after class. Be sure to make note of any parts you didn’t understand or missed. Ask either the professor or a friend via email or before the next class period to get the missing information.

Try to pass your first test in each class to boost self-confidence. Make up a list of study questions and definitions and practice reciting this information aloud, either to yourself or someone else. Don’t wait until the last minute study. Rather, study for short periods over several days. Of course, you will want to review the night before a test.

Finally, test day arrives. Use these strategies during your exam to make all your hard work worthwhile. Read directions carefully before you begin. Take a few minutes to look over the test, then answer all the questions you know first. This will help you get sure points and builds confidence. Don’t leave any blanks; it is better to guess if you don’t know. Watch your time, and manage it accordingly. Don’t rush, but don’t go too slow. Take a few minutes at the end of class to look over your test to be sure you have answered all questions and that your answers make sense.

And when you finally discover that school’s not all it’s cracked up to be, you always have alternatives.

Jazz From Goa, India

30th November

HP- Tell us something about yourself.

CD- I’m a Mumbai goan looking forward to being a Goa goan very soon. I’ve reached two important milestones in my career. One is, after decades of playing everyone elses music i’ve development a style of my own and the biggest compliment I get these days is when someone recognizes my bassplaying on some tune they heard somewhere, they call up to confirm and..voila! The other milestone is probably every musicians dream, to produce music out of my own studio. A dream that will come true for me within this year when I setup my own state of the art studio in Sangolda. I’ve also setup an organisation called Jazz Goa with the help of fellow musicians and jazz enthusiasts in Goa.

HP- What drew you towards jazz?

CD- Jazz is a huge word, it should be spelt jjjaaaazzzzz! Seriously though, I think jazz is the most open, alive and evolving form of music that allows a musician to be him/herself. Most other forms of music demands a musician to follow trends and tradition or create stuff that’s currently hip. Whereas a jazz musician goes about his business listening, assimilating and finally innovating with yet another genre of jazz! We now have dixiland-jazz, swing-jazz, bebop-jazz, funk-jazz, rock-jazz, pop-jazz, fusion-jazz, latin-jazz, indo-jazz, mando-jazz… to cut a long story short, there’s a -jazz attached to every genre of music. And there will be a -jazz attached to every genre that comes along. I’m a musician who’s atracted to anything that looks, feels, smells, tastes and even sounds like music, so naturally I choose jazz as I get to play it ALL.

HP- What sets apart jazz music from other genres?

CD- Jazz is the only form of music that embraces all other forms and it is no longer American music. Today jazz can safely be called world music.

HP- What led you to become a jazz artiste?

CD- From amoung all the different genre’s of music I grew up listening to, for some reason it was always jazz that struck those extended chords within me. I could always hear the human and very often super human element in a jazz rendition.

HP- Your favourite jazz aristes/tracks.

CD- You’ll need to extend this interview by a few thousand pages to answer that. My all time favourite however was a bassplayer called Jaco Pastorius who revolutionised bassplaying taking bass right upfront, over, under and right through a song.

HP- To whom would you attribute your credentials as a jazz musician?

CD- To everyone i’ve worked with and everyone I would like to work with someday.

HP- Where and how did you train to be a jazz artiste?

CD- I have no formal training in music, I learnt music listening to other musicians, assimilating what I liked and using it consiously or subconsiously in performance until i developed a style of my own. Once I decided to play professionally though, I did study the technicalities through some great music books that are easily available these days.

HP- How do you prepare for a gig?

CD- I make sure there’s enough soda to go with the whisky…just kidding! It depends, if it is a concert where I would be performing my own compositions, I get the tunes composed, then get the band to rehearse and sound the way I heard it in my head. As it often turnsout, input from the rest of the band takes the tune to a dimension I would never have imagined. So you see, music is all about connecting and collaborating, don’t believe any of those fantastic one man bands. They’re faking it for monetary reasons, not that I have anything against it. All is fair in love, war and music.

HP- Talking about gigs, where and when did you first perform/how long have you been into jazz?

CD- Like most musicians I first got into music with school/college bands. I then graduated into fivestar hotel resident bands whose repertoire was made up mainly of jazz standards. I did that for ten years, playing music every night made me a musician.

HP- What is the jazz scene like in India, and Goa in particular?

CD- The jazz scene in India, Goa or anywhere in the world is the same. There’s a niche group of performers and listeners that grows all the time. Hopefully with jazz’s open armed evolution, it will grow into the global sound of music.

HP- What have been your highs and lows in your career thus far?

CD- The highs have always been the applause at the end of a track performed, the lows would be finding out that the applause was actually for the sixer Sachin hit on the big screen just besides the stage at Jazz by the Bay in Mumbai.

HP- How would you explain your role as a jazz musician in society?

CD- A jazz musician gives people a nicer high than some other interesting social highs.

HP- Define jazz.

CD- Jazz is improvised music. Sometimes structured, sometimes orchestrated, sometimes free of form and almost always, spontaneously created.

HP- Notable gigs/performances.

CD- The world reknowned Hennessey XO jazz tour has always been featuring jazz artistes signed by the American Blue Note label. Last year for the first time a jazz band outside the label, from far away India, was selected for this prestigious international tour. I was the bassplayer for that band. An unforgettable experience for sure. More recently my indo-jazz fusion band ‘The Brown Indian Band’ has been approached to open for Sting’s European tour this year. Fingers are crossed about that one.

HP- Collaborations with other musicians.

CD- I am contineously collaborating with musicians from all over the world thanks to the internet and my website http://www.hullocheck.com

HP- I understand you have been into different genres of music and worked with various ensembles. Tell us more.

CD- As I mentioned it before, when it comes to music I want it ALL. Name the genre and chances are, i’ve been there. You’ll find traces of just about every genre in my own music. There are very few musicians in the world today, who would match the number of bands and musicians I have worked with.

HP- Currently performing at…

CD- I currently perform on two resident contracts in Mumbai at the JW Marriott hotel in the afternoons and the Taj Lands End hotel in the nights. I also take timeoff from these two gigs to perform at concerts and corporate events in India and abroad. So that averages some sixty gigs a month!

HP- Your hobbies/interests…

CD- My main hobby and interest is my profession today. Everyone else works for a living, I play for mine. Someone once told me ‘All play and no work makes…makes me tick!’ Seriously though, I am very keen on improving the plight of most goan musicians in Goa. I was one sometime ago so I should know the raw deal most of them get. My plan is to set up Jazz Goa as an umbrella organisation for not just jazz but all the other immense artistic talent in Goa. To start with my studio in Sangolda will record and produce deserving artistes. Jazz Goa will then launch the best from there at a global level. Jazz Goa has already produced four audio CD’s and a DVD that is available in Goa exclusively at Vibes Music in Margao and online at http://www.jazzgoa.com

Kenny Chesney Tickets – Star Power, Pure Country Sound

30th November

Kenny Chesney tickets are available once again for a series of live performances, and this sometimes-controversial country music star has ridden his wave of success for more than 10 years. Chesney is known for his true-to-roots sound, and even his much-publicized personal life has led to his overall fame and reputation as a true country star. Below we’ll take a look at his life and his commercial success in hopes of explaining how he’s reached such an elite status on the music scene.

Early Life/Career Beginnings

Kenneth Arnold Chesney was born on March 26, 1968, in Knoxville, Tennessee and raised in Luttrell, Tennessee. Generally speaking, Chesney enjoyed a “normal” childhood in which he attended Gibbs High School in Corryton, Tennessee and then attended and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in advertising.

Chesney got his “start” in music while he was in college, as he climbed the ranks much like many musicians, scrapping his way through several local clubs and busking while selling his self-financed and self-recorded demo-type albums. Despite his need for busking, which is basically street performing, Chesney managed to earn a reputation and a local following, and Kenny Chesney tickets soon became a popular item in the local area.

Roots of Success

After finishing college, Chesney moved to Nashville to embark on his big-time musical dreams. He got his start in Nashville in much the same way he did in college – by playing in local clubs at every opportunity. It wasn’t long before he once again garnered a loyal local following and was noticed by record producers. In 1992, Chesney signed his first recording contract with BMI.

He did not release his first album with BMI until 1995, and it was entitled, All I Need to Know. The album went gold, however, and Chesney was on his way to the top. Since then, he has released 10 subsequent albums, and each of the last eight studio releases has achieved a minimum of platinum status. Simply put, Chesney is a household name in the country music world.

Personal Life

Chesney has also gained a reputation in the tabloids, most notably for his short-lived marriage to actress Renée Zellweger in 2005. The marriage lasted only four months, and in September of 2005, after only four months of marriage, the couple announced plans for an annulment.

Overall, Chesney presents pure talent and energy at every one of his live performances, which is why Kenny Chesney tickets are always in high demand.

Wicked Has Become the Yellow Brick Road to Box Office Gold

30th November

The hottest most sold out New York theater event in a long time, the production of Wicked is selling out tickets, gaining fans and driving Internet ticket sales through the roof. Why? Why? and I will ask again…why? The fascinating story of the original “Wizard Of Oz” is kept alive on Broadway, Wicked tells the story well before Dorothy ever steps foot on the yellow brick road, well before Kansas is even hit by a tornado and well before Toto becomes a house hold name.

Wicked begins it’s storyline well before any of these event, a matter of fact it begins with the youth of what will become the “Witches of Oz,” focusing on how these two friends left school and headed to the Emerald forest, how they met the Wizard and how they separated into two different directions, good and evil. The characters really tell a deeper story of the American concept of good and evil and how it relates into our society today.

Wicked on Broadway in the Theater District of New York stars a new cast of the following, Shoshana Bean, Megan Hilty, Ben Vereen, RueMcClanahan, David Ayers, Michelle Federer, Jeffrey Kuhn, William Youmans. there was an original cast to the show which has been replaced.

Winning the praises of critics and audiences alike, with a somewhat weak musical score compared to other venues on the famed Broadway theater district in the heart of New York, what you get here is the “prequel” the original “Wizard of Oz” which is fascinating in itself. If you are a fan of the original, then Wicked is a must see for you. The production is enduring great success at the Gershwin Theatre and will be running through 2006. Wicked Broadway tickets average around eighty-five dollars and sell out often.

If you are looking for a great night out on the town, or are a big fan of the original Wizard of Oz this is a show which cannot be missed. Not only will you learn of all the events which lead to the characters of the Wizard of Oz, you will find yourself captivated by the differences of the witches and how they grow to head in such separate direction. The show goes much deeper then a theater production, it dives right into the hearts of it’s characters and how they relate to our perceptions of good and evil in society today.

Music by Stephen Schwartz Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, under the direction of Joe Mantello you can’t go wrong with this already huge hit on Broadway, so make some fun dinner plans in the big city and catch this most talked about Broadway theater event of the year.

The amazing growth of the number of websites in the internet is stupendous. A user friendly, well designed website is one of the greatest assets imaginable today for any business, organization or community group. The website is one of the boons the internet revolution has bestowed on to the world community at large.

The great advantage of having a website is that it will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can be viewed from anywhere in the world. Though the latter aspect might not be a necessity for community groups, clubs and schools, the advantage is that any member of the group traveling around the world or living in far away places could easily access the website and gather the latest information or update without bothering others.

Need of Website for Large Businesses:

In today’s business environment and to beat the competition large companies definitely need a website. Websites can be used to advertise the company in a cost effective manner, describe their services and goods and in fact display the images of their products. The names, phone numbers and other details of their executive staff could be displayed making it easy for the customers, suppliers and advertisers to contact them if necessary. Customers could be kept informed of up and coming promotions and product developments. They could also provide provision for customers to buy online.

Need of Website for Small Businesses:

The need for a website is equally important for small businesses since they can establish their online presence which is very vital today. They could provide all the information about their business, their products and also have provisions to sell their products online. Answering telephone can be minimized by directing customers to the website.

Need of Website or Internet Marketers:

The need for a website is very obvious here. The whole concept of internet marketing or affiliate marketing revolves around the website unlike businesses with brick and mortar buildings. Need Of Website for Schools:

The website provides the opportunity for the schools to give the students a practical or hands-on-training on creating and updating a website. It also gives the students the opportunity to produce their own newsletter and contribute articles to the newsletter.

Need of Website for Churches:

The website can provide information about the days and times of services, meetings and details of up-coming events. They could also publish other related matters and about events news about their fraternity.

Need of Website for Clubs:

Clubs can display all their up-coming events and also publish the results of club’s sports activities. They can display the photographs of their officials and sports personalities thus inspiring the youngsters to emulate them. All social events involving club members could also be published.

Need of Website for Community Groups and Organizations:

Announce your presence so that others who are interested in your activities could join you. The website provides the opportunity to share your group’s information with similar groups not only in your country but worldwide.

Need of Website for Individuals:

The need for communicating with friends and family around the world is of paramount importance. Along with the email the website has become very useful in this respect. You can share your personal interests, hobbies and activities with them. If you have any special interest in TV, Music or Basketball you could provide a lot of information on these topics and make it interesting for your friends and family to visit your site.

A visit to search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN will indicate that there are millions and millions of websites in the internet covering every imaginable topic under the sun. This simply indicates that businesses, individuals and communities believe in the need for a website to promote and publicize themselves or their products.

Taking Homeschooling Outdoors

30th November

The saying All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy was not coined without any reason. Homeschooling a child is a whole new approach towards educating a child. Educating a child is a big responsibility. The main objective of homeschooling parents should be the all round development of a child, which will equip him/her to deal with the world, and enable him/her to carve his/her own identity in this competitive world. However, when parents homeschool their children, the dilemma often arises about how much time a child should spend studying within the confines of his/her study room.

Researchers have repeatedly stressed that all homeschooling need not take place at home. An academic experience can be gathered from anywhere in the world, and time and again it has been proved that educational adventures pursued in the real world opens up a childs mind more. Educational trips are one of the best ways of learning, because nature and personal experience of things are the greatest teachers. An outdoors educational experience also encourages parents to spend more time with their kids, which increases their confidence level.

Summer is a great time to take the homeschool outdoors in the form of camps or special hobby classes. Whatever means you choose to plan an outdoor educational endeavor, there is no doubt it will be a refreshing experience, both for the child and the parent. Parents who choose to homeschool are often criticized for depriving their children of the social experiences in regular schools, i.e. making friends and an all-round learning approach. Taking homeschool outdoors can be an answer to that.

A child can be homeschooled and still attend other classes, like judo or music lessons, and thus be a part of a social group of his/her own age. A child can be homeschooled and also be a part of community gatherings and hence be in touch with a large number of people. The best thing about homeschooling is that it is up to the child and parents to decide his/her academic pursuits and social involvement level. It goes without saying that parents want their children to have complete development, and they are also aware that a childs mind needs to be refreshed regularly. Plus, parents also know that it is important for their children to interact with their own peer group, so that they can fit into society when they grow up. Thus, to think that a childs social adequacy will suffer because of homeschooling is baseless.

There are many educational academies and organizations that organize various camps to assist homeschooling parents in planning their outdoor educational excursions. These outdoor camps deal with different aspects of education. While some involve children in scientific tasks dealing with nature, others include drawing and painting classes. The outdoor camps can be as long as a week or just for a day. But, all of them, apart from imparting interesting lessons, also teach children the 3 Cs – Communication, Cooperation and Commitment – which are the basic elements for leading an ideal social life. Parents usually do not accompany their kids on camps, unless they themselves lead it. Camping also teaches children how to keep their surroundings clean and the common etiquettes of eating, setting the table etc.

It is not necessary that parents wait until the summer for an outdoor teaching experience. They can homeschool outdoors on a seasonal basis, or even on a daily basis. For example, during the spring season, parents can take their child to the nearby woods to show the seasonal flora and fauna, or they can go on a daily walk together discussing about anything that interests them. Homeschooling that includes large doses of experiences outdoors will give children all they require for all round development.
