Determining the Best Music Lessons for Kids – Guitar or Piano?

31st October

As a parent, you would like to give your child as much as you could afford. Areas that contribute to a child’s overall well-being include good health, educational opportunities, and positive encouragement. These things may include material and intangible items, abstractions, or even experiences, among which are art workshops or kids’ guitar lessons. Imagine how proud you would be if your child learned a new skill such as playing a musical instrument?

Music lessons are a beneficial addition to anyone’s life, and are especially great for developing a child’s creativity. Most guitar lessons for beginners courses are suitable for children to learn to play the guitar. The skills that are enhanced through music or art lessons include increased abilities in mathematics, concentration, focus, plus a healthier sense of self esteem and confidence. Music lessons have so many positive outcomes and advantages (no matter the effort or cost).

Several important considerations need to be made when choosing which instrument your child should learn first (such as convenience, price, size). I learned to play guitar when I was 11 on a child sized guitar which was suited to my smaller hand size at that time. Check out the prices of pianos and having them shipped before promising piano lessons to your child! But if you feel you can’t invest what is needed with other types of lessons such as piano lessons due to the aforementioned factors, the best choice for your child would be a guitar lessons course.

Why should you or should you not let your child choose to learn the guitar? A Guitar for a beginner is easy to find and is very affordable. This way, you could provide your child with unforgettable knowledge and experiences that he will surely love even as he grows up. Pianos require a professional tuner and can be expensive to move, whereas guitars are easy to store, carry and tuning is also easy.

Guitars make a good choice because they can be taken almost anywhere. Kids love exploration and new things and they like being able to share what they’ve learned. They might want to practice playing their instruments with their playmates at the playground, at the backyard, or anywhere outside the house where the view may be inspiring for some good music. With a paino, the space it takes up and it’s inability to be used in more than one place can be a problem.

Moreover, if you can’t keep up with the professional fees of a music teacher, there are great guitar video courses to watch onlne. There are also several good guitar lesson DVDs for your child to learn from. Children can learn very quickly with video demos and lessons. With the guitar, it is easier to learn while watching. One way parents can have more input in their child’s guitar lessons is by purchasing a program that has teacher’s materials so that there is a lesson plan to follow. I can recommend homeschool guitar lessons for parents who want to keep track of their child’s progress (these types of lessons provide teacher and student lesson books to help you).

Most kids are inpired to learn to play the guitar because of the many celebrity musicians they know about and idolize. As kids are able to learn about music, chords and timing (and even how to read musical notes) with the guitar, many later want to learn to play the piano – they will be better able to learn a second instrument having mastered one.

A guitar course for kids is really an effective tool in helping your child grow into a holistic adult. This is the best that parents can wish for their children. Giving guitar lessons to a kid is definitely giving a gift of great value. You might find your child has some musical talent that you would not have known about – it’s up to you to help them get started learning to play a musical instrument.

The Guitar, How Is It Made?

31st October

The questions that surround the history of the guitar are many.  Making a guitar is part art and part science. Composite material now plays a role in many of today’s guitars. All of the metal parts of the guitar have also benefited from technology. The making of a guitar has not changed very much over many centuries. The entire world contributes to the guitars we have today in the woods that come from these countries.

Maple is the most often used material for the guitar neck as the wood must be very hard. The truss rod is now used to resist the twisting force applied to the neck.

Hard woods such as ebony and rosewood are often used for the fret board of the guitar. In addition to being very dense these materials are also hard wearing and will last a lifetime. Fret boards may last a very long time if taken care of properly.

The simplest tuning mechanism for the guitar is a wooden peg with the string wrapped around it. With modern machine heads, as they are called, much finer tuning adjustments are possible. Also part of the improvement in tuning is the adjustable bridge. With machine heads and adjustable bridges it is now possible to get  in tune and stay in tune. Now we also have the guitar tuner which helps all guitar players be in tune with each other as well as in tune with themselves.

The history of guitar was changed forever with the creation of the electrical pickup. The pickup has evolved from crude to sophisticated. From the simple beginnings of the pickup came the electric solid body guitar of today. Now the pickup allowed the guitar to be heard with a drummer or a band. It is safe to say that the history of the guitar was changed forever by the pickup.

The guitar has changed in technology and material, but not in spirit.

Fender Electric Guitars : About Explorations in Innovation

28th October

Stevie Ray Vaughan hailed from Dallas Texas, and his name is synonymous with fender electric guitars. Stevie predominantly played a late fifties or early sixties version of the Strat (opinion is divided on its exact date), but there is no doubting that it was a Fender Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. Stevie seemed to favour this guitar over most others, and the sound is distinctly Fender, and Strat in particular, in quality.

The sound produced by Stevie Ray is almost classic Fender. The Strat is very distinctive, and adds a beautiful tone, especially to Stevie Ray’s blues playing. There is a lot of recorded music by Stevie Ray, and all of it is great to hear. I certainly recommend that you seek some out and enjoy the Texas blues at its very best.

Stevie’s background was steeped in the blues, so it is no surprise that his recordings feature many blues cuts. The video of Stevies’ performance of Texas Flood is a great example of his feel for the blues. Stevie didn’t stop with the blues though, and he used his Fender Guitar to great effect on many of his own compositions, as well as blues classics. He played a kind of shuffle exquisitely, as demonstrated on brilliant tunes such as ‘Pride and Joy’ and ‘Cold Shot’. SRV also covered many rock classics, and could do anything song he turned his attention to justice.

I had the great privilege of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at the Hammersmith Odeon (it’s now called something else I think) in London, in the late 1980’s. Apart from the pleasure of seeing SRV play, the event was doubly memorable for me because Eric Clapton came in, accompanied by Ringo Starr and other halves, and sat down in front of me! How cool was that.

Stevie wrapped his Fender around all his classic cuts, including some specialty rocks songs that he covered, in honour of his peers. I am thinking here of Jimi Hendrix, for whom SRV covered Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. And Stevie’s renditions of these songs were spectacular. However, remembering Eric Clapton, reminded me of another SRV cover, which I recall EC getting very animated about, And that was a version of Stevie Wonder’s classic song ‘Superstition’, played with all the panache you would expect from a super showman like Stevie Ray Vaughan. And if Eric Clapton loved it, who am I to argue?

I am very grateful to the likes of Google’s You Tube that allows us to see late great artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan plying their trade. Seeing these great performers, many on stage where they were in their element. is a chance to see great workmen use their tools of trade, which in Stevie Ray’s case, was a Fender Electric Guitar!

The Perfect Gifts For A Beatles Fan

28th October

If you have a Beatles fan in your family & friends (yourself included!) you should circle September 9, 2009 on a calander because that’s the day three incredible Beatles related gifts are being released. The stereo box, mono box, and Beatles Rock Band video game. In this post I’ll go into a little detail about what makes each of these products such a great gift for Beatles fans.

The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box

Every single song The Beatles released from 1962 through ‘70 in very high quality stereo. That’s all thirteen British albums from 1962’s Please Please Me through ’70’s Let It Be. And yes this is a great gift even if the Beatlemaniac in question already owns all of their albums on CD. Why? Because these CDs sound much better than the older CDs.

These new CDs capture more of the original sound from the master tapes than do the old CDs. They allow for more details in the music to be heard and they have a “warmer” sound as well.

The Beatles Mono Box Set (Remastered)

This is a great present for really serious Beatles fans because this is what all of the true “purists” have been waiting for: Finally, the original mono mixes from the 1960s are available on CD. This is the first time that the Beatles albums will be heard as they were originally intended to be heard by many Beatles fans!

Each of the band’s first 10 albums was mixed in mono and the band actually spent much more time working in mono than they did in stereo. The reason for that is that in the 1960s stereo was still a new concept and was thought to be something of a “fad.” Most of their fans listened to mono at that time so it only made sense for them to concentrate on the mono mixes.

Beatles Rock Band

This is a great gift for any Beatles fan who also enjoys playing video games. But I must say that you don’t have to be a video game addict to like playing Rock Band. I hate video games in general but I love playing this particular game.

If you have younger “gamers” in your family who don’t yet know or appreciate The Beatles music this may be a great way to get them into it.

The Forgotten Background of the Guitar

27th October

Ever tried meditating on the roots of your prized guitar? The appearance of the guitar today is a far cry form what it looked like before. The guitar’s roots run so deep, reaching to the time of the Mesopotamian era. The pioneering model of the guitar was from Iraq, only to pop up again two millennia later. Back then, it was still known as Mesopotamia. In the vicinity of an excavation area, archaeologists discovered some caves with drawings of humans with what appeared to be string like instruments resembling a guitar. After the development of Rome and a couple millennia later, yet another stringed instrument that was made similarly like the guitar was found in a tomb. The version of the guitar proved to be pretty popular during the dark ages as well. During those times, there were two prominent designs that were most common, which had either a French or a German influence. One was softer in appearance, with a round belly and a stout neck for the frets and of course a sound hole. The other was more geometric and straight-edged. These were discovered in church ruins and tombs in England. It is speculated that these guitars were of Moorish influence, brought in when the Moors arrived in Europe in the beginning of the 8th century. In terms of the maturation of the guitar, Spain was the main center as it was located where the Moors initially started their invasion. Initially with twelve frets, the guitar model that was initially developed and gained popularity was the Vihuela. So that everyone could play it, tabs were then written to make playing easier. Like the lute, the guitar became the instrument of choice during the resistance. If you think about it, this contributes largely to the guitar’s modern day image. In between the 17th and 18th century, the guitar became even more popular because of Louis XIV. Mastering the art of guitar playing was a novelty among the elite in Europe. A hundred years later, the guitar has finally morphed into the guitar we see today. The guitar became so popular that it was finally brought to America, it’s popularity had spread worldwide after that. We have finally reached modern times, where everyone started to acknowledge the guitar. Self-expression through the guitar became a huge fad. People started idolizing and recognizing talented guitarists; music played through the guitar was the new in thing. More and more people wanted to hear guitar music; more and more musicians wanted bigger and better guitars. As a result, the guitar industry developed something called the electric guitar. Whatever the music genre, the guitar is always the top choice for anyone in the music industry. Throughout time, transcending cultures, the guitar and the guitarist share a special bond between the two of them. It remains to be the number one choice to play in self-expression.
