How do you get into Berklee College of Music?

Im a high schooler and i play guitar.
Also, is Berklee a good school?
Which one is better, massachusetts or california?

My brother got accepted into the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he was also a guitar player, and he went up to Boston and auditioned early decision. He worked with a guitar teacher, and picked to do either classical or jazz, and he put together a piece with him. He didn't end up going, just because it wasn't a right fit for him, but if you work with a teacher and decide either jazz or classical, you'd have a better chance.

And to the person above me, he spelled it right, but I don't think that there's two, Berklee in Boston, and Berkley in California.

Is Berklee a reputable school for their music management degree? Also, do you extenesive theory before admission to the school, or can you just be an experienced player who is good?

UC-Berkeley is a good school. Theory is usually part of the curriculum for musicians as it helps you in so! many ways.

I recommend looking it up on the internet.

Contemporary Music Colleges?

Does anyone know of any contemporary music colleges? I.e Berklee School of Music In Boston?

Do you mean colleges that offer courses on the Contemporary Music style, or just current colleges that focus soley on music?
A lot of colleges have courses that teach about the Contemporary Music style. In fact, as most colleges have a 4 semester theory program, the 4th semester is usually based on 20th century/Contemporary composition styles.
As for music colleges, there are berklee, San francisco Conservatory, Juliard, and a few others, but you'll get just as good of an education elsewhere. I go to a state college and I have classmates who went to Berklee and feel the education is better at the state college.

Berklee Vocal Audition?

I'm attending a five-week performance workshop at Berklee School of Music this summer and I need to prepare a vocal audition. The piece needs to be short and I only have one shot at it. I'm a soprano (if that helps at all.) Any suggestions?

It's hard to tell you something without more information: how old you are, how long have you been singing, how are you at foreign languages, are you a high soprano ( lyric, spinto, dramatic, etc) what have you sung before that seems to suit your voice well, etc.
Picking a song is like, well, picking a card out of the deck. there are so many choices
Get back to me, and I'll be glad to add something positive..

What best to perform for audition for Berklee Music (voice)??

So my audition is next friday, and the interview the day before that. I have training and experience in more classical music. But out side of all that school stuff, Im into contemporary music, more rock/pop (not mush jazz exp.) I have written some songs with simple accompaniment and as a hobby have been recording songs (also reaarangements of songs with acoustic guitar) too. I also dabble into making music with programs like guitar pro.

The problem is I have 15 mintues, and chance to do ONE piece of music. I don't really know what to do, a classical piece, or contemporary piece of music. I know I will do fine with classical, but style wise I like contemporay more. I can' really say which one im better at, because they are too different. I've won karaoke contest and performed live with my acoustic guitar on stage, and it was something I really enjoyed. Another problem is, I am wondering if I should bring in a CD of a few songs I wrote too?

So any suggestions? ^__^;;

First of all, the audition you're going to is probably going to be packed so none of the judges will have time to listen to your CD. You may want to take it with you to your interview as supporting material. As for the singing audition, choose the song that you do best which fits the kind of program you are trying to get into. If the program is more oriented towards opera / classical / art song type singing, don't sing a pop/rock tune. If you are going for the vocal jazz program then do a musical theatre or pop tune. Many auditionees make the mistake of not finding out what the school wants before they audition. Do your "homework" ahead of time so you'll get every consideration. Good luck.

Berklee and other music schools?General Quesitons?

Hi guys…I am a sophomore in high school, I play the guitar. I've been taking private lessons for the last 6 years, and I consider myself pretty proficient in the jazz world, and very proficient in the rock world. I'd like to go to school for those two realms, probably more in the jazz realm. I've looked into Berklee after I graduate, but what are some other schools I can look into? What are things i can practice to make my acceptance more possible? Is there anything in the bay area preferably, where I'd like to be? The rest of california works too

How selective is Berklee College of Music and any audition tips?

I'm only a junior in high school, but I'm just wandering about Berklee (I play alto sax). And are their any other music colleges that can compare to Berklee (on the eastern side of the country)?

I know nothing about that college but I know some about auditions:

Stand (or sit lol) confidently and make sure even if you are nervous they can not see that.
Choose a song that fits your personality but shows off your talent.
If you make a mistake dont let your face show it and continue on with a confident smile on your face.

How good are my chances for getting admission into a good music school like the Berklee ?

i have been a guitarist and vocalist in a band since 3 years .. we have performed at various college fests across the country. and on two occasions i have won the title of best rhythm guitarist. though i have not written any great songs. i have written two songs that sound kinda good. but me and our band have covered a lot of songs from popular metal and rock ats like led zepplin, metallica, megadeth and the likes.
kindly tell me a good college according to my abilities.

Mate to be honest, getting into Berklee is fairly impossible for people who just play in bands doing cover songs.

You'll need to be VERY competant with jazz and blues, as this is what the course is based around mainly. You'll need to be able to improvise over some pretty intense, mind-melting chord progressions, and you'll need to be able to demonstrate a HUGE variety of styles, tones, techniques, and methods.

If you want to get into Berklee sometime before 2080, start working on it NOW. Get the Modern Method For Guitar Vol. 1-3 written by the Berklee Guitar instructor William Leavitt, and get cracking. But I guarantee that unless you can do all the things I mentioned above (oh, and you MUST be able to sight read sheet music perfectly) that you just won't stand a chance.

They'll ask you things like "improvise a solo in the style of 1960s American Jazz over the chords F#7add11, G#dim, Am7add9 and E6add13 at a tempo of 213bpm" and you will just have to be able to do that. It's the same for almost all music colleges around the world. Being able to play Black Dog or Tornado Of Souls just won't get you in, because there are about 4 billion guitarists who can play things like that.

Once you're in, however, the fun starts. That's when you can branch out, and along with playing the jazz and blues and bebop they expect, you can form metal bands and go nuts. Just like Dream Theater did! It's so, so, SO worth putting the effort in. Guitarists who can sight read and improvise over ridiculously difficult chord progressions are extremely rare, and you'll be snapped up by session musicians and touring bands all over the world once they know what you're capable of.

Just like every single job in the world though, it takes commitment, effort, practice, time and lack of sleep. Get started now! I promise you it will be worth it.
