Synergy Brass Quintet

Acclaimed for their technical virtuosity, outstanding showmanship and diverse programming,
the Synergy Brass Quintet has emerged as one of the country’s most exciting ensembles. Already in their young career, Synergy has performed across the country and has participated in some of the world’s most prestigious music festivals including the Ravinia Music Festival, the Bethlehem Musikfest, the Tanglewood Festival and even the Boston Early Music Festival. After hearing the ensemble at Tanglewood in 2003, Samuel Adler invited Synergy to perform on the premiere recording of his “Transfiguration: An Ecumenical Mass.” In addition to Synergy’s rigorous performance schedule, the ensemble dedicates an enormous amount of time to the education of tomorrow’s musicians and music-lovers. The 2009 NYSSMA (New York State School Music ociation) conference this past weekend in Rochester was awesome. New York State School Music ociation advocates for and improves music education across New York State. About 6,000 students audition for the 8 All-State performing groups, and just under 900 are selected to participate annually in Rochester. My daughter Sarah was part of the Women’s Chorus.

Does anyone play a william lewis violin or viola(pref 60s-70s)? whadaya think of its tone?

My old music teacher offered to give me his old viola. When I brought it home today, my dad started b#@%^ing about how he was suspicious about how much money it was worth. I thought what the hell?! It doesn't matter what the instrument is worth, as long as its an upgrade and gives you growing room. The first viola was an eastman model 80(lowest eastman viola level). It was so hard to get a reaction out of it and the bow reacted slower to it. The c string quality was boring and I had to go up to heavy dominants(and sort jargar a) to get any substantial darkness out of the instrument. He keeps saying "i payed 500 dollars…b@#$, b(*&^, b!@~%". It has a few dings and dents but what do you expect, its 40 years old and was used in a public school for a while!? It has a nice choclatee c string(with med dominants) and i might have to use pirazzis to brighten it. I still have to use the forte jargar but mainly because i think larsens are too stong for my tastes.
I have the viola now. I love the c string. its rich and choclatey. I like the response of it too. Most of the information stated is stuff i know and do. I asked if anyone PLAYED an antique lewis from the 1960-70s. I mainly got it because I have a huge(national scale) competition coming up and i want an upgrade instrument for that but not one that i will use in college(ima senior).

Research online what new William Lewis violas go for. If you like the sound and it is an upgrade for you $500 is reasonable. Stringed instruments are costly. The older models if well made originally and maintained well are usually better than new. Scratches mean nothing, except that someone wasn't careful, but sound is everything! You can get polish for stringed instruments (Southwest Strings has it, never use furniture polish) and that helps keep your instrument clean and nice looking.

Top Music Colleges and Universities?

I am only a freshman in high school, but I really would like to start looking at this. I play violin, harp and piano (relatively well) and am an avid singer ( I am in my school ensemble and NJYC-The New Jersey Youth Chorus). I would like to at least minor in some sort of music if not major. I also love to act and dance. I dance ballet and pointe about four times a week and my dream is to act on broadway. I hope this information has helped you narrow down some schools for me, as broad as it is. Please do not mention Juliard, as I already know about it. I also have looked into Eastman, but I dont know. Thank you!

Vanderbilt University's Blair School Of Music

Berklee School of Music is also very good.

Music college question?

As far as the different music colleges go, I’m looking for something that’s not completely outrageous in price but still a good program (not Julliard or anything of the sort).

I’m a sophomore in high school and I play the violin.
I’ve sort of looked into Eastman at the University of Rochester, University of Michigan, Northwestern… Any others?

Also consider Indiana University and Oberlin. Good luck!
