Would it be better to do a guitar course at a music school instead of taking private lessons?

I have been saving up for a year now while practicing guitar by myself and I've goten to the stage where I feel stuck like I'm not making any progress.

I have decided I want to be taught now and don't know whether I should take private lessons or look for a music school to attend.

If it would be better to go to a music school and learn acoustic/jazz guitar where would be a good school to go?

I am in UK in the london area by the way.

It depends on the instructor. The late Craig Bolyn, one of the best guitarists I ever knew, easily on a par with Clapton, refused to teach anyone who owned a Silvertone or other cheap guitar with the strings a quarter of an inch from the frets. He himself played an old Les Paul, whose action made it possible for him to play with little effort. If you find a private instructor like that, he's worth every penny. I only wish I had taken lessons! (My consolation is that I became fluent on blues harp!)

I am planning on using Final Fantasy music in a video for a project at school. Is it copyright infringement?

I already bought the soundtrack and plan to use more than thirty seconds (or 10%) of a music track. I don’t know if more information is necessary.

Usually it’s alright for educational purposes. Even so it’s best to give credit. In some schools you can get into trouble for not referencing your sources in an essay. It could be considered the same thing with music, so I would suggest just giving the name of the song and the artist at the end, in the credits or something.

my teacher said that if its unblocked we can listen to music….and its not like i dont wait until im finished researching and writing…its afterwards.

Your school has certain sites blocked for a reason. Usually, it's due to questionable content on the sites.

You may be allowed to hear music with occasional light curse words like damn, hell, etc. Some parents don't want their kids to hear that in music. Same with pictures. You could be allowed to view semi nudity & other kids may not be allowed. So the school blocks those kinds of sites to everyone to protect themselves from being sued.

Ask your teacher to use a boombox or an Ipod with a speaker system instead. With the boombox, you can bring kid friendly CDs from home to share. With an Ipod, the library can be kid friendly there too.

can one get better at music after music school?

Do you think I can still get better if I practice and not have a teacher or peers besides maybe a couple friends? I used to practice so furiously when I was in school, now I haven’t played in a long time, I want to find a reason to play again

Of course all you need is willpower, you don’t NEED teachers there to make you better. I feel that after music school you’re too advanced for teachers anyway and need to learn stuff on your own.

What are your thoughts on the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University?

I'm still going, but I have to apply for my doctorate while overseas so that I may enter in Spring 2010.
My piano prof is an IU alum, and she's amazing, both as a person and musician.

At least IU talks to prospective applicants. Cambridge is too tight-lipped. (throws nose in the air)

Jacobs is a great school! Definitely one of the best places to study music in the world. They have a world class faculty who is sought after by students around the world. Led by Beau Arts Trio pianist Mennahem Pressler, the piano faculty is a who's who of the world's best teachers. Andre Watts, Evelyn Brancart, and Ed Auer mentor a group of the most talented pianists in the world.

The faculty also includes violinist Jaime Laredo, Janos Starker (cello), Myron Bloom (horn), and Teresa Kubiack (voice). IU has a leading musicology, early music and music education department. The ballet department ranks amongst the best in the world which includes schools like The Juilliard School.

Because of the faculty, reputation, and success record, students always have IU on their audition list. Definitely one of the best schools to attend for those pursuing a career in music.

The most interesting thing about the school is that the music building was built as a bomb shelter and later coverted into a music school. It's a big circle!

What kind of music is played at a school semi-formal dance?

And how do you dance to them?

Sorry, i've never been to one before….

all types: slow, pop, r&b, etc. any song that doesn't have any curse words or implies something that isn't school appropriate. Most songs you probably listen on the radio will be played at the dance.

You mostly slow dance, grind, or jump around.

Anyone ever work at a music school?

I'm considering quitting my job and opening a music school. What do you know about them? What are the 10 things I need to know beyond the obvious?! Help me with your experience.

I have an A.R.C.T. on both piano and violin, and a number of other teacher ready to join on.

How much should I charge? What hours?

HELP! Anything you can tell me helps. I'm in Hamilton ontario canada.

I worked for one successful one; location, quality teaching, publicity without advertising.
If you can do it without selling instruments, all the better.
Community involvement – I led the village concert band for the summer – accompanied an amateur musical – stuff like that.
V-e-r-y slow in the summer; a bummer, the kids lose so much they need two months to get back to where they were in May!
