I am doing an arguing a position paper and would greatly appreciate it if you guys helped me out and gave me your thoughts on whether or not you believe music classes or art should be required of all high school students. Please feel free to use personal experiences or what ever you like! Thank you!

Michael Cho

I am actually a music education major so I might just have a start for you. (and I would hate to be out of a job =)

Especially if you are in a public school system or a big city music education allows students to make a bond that can potentially last them grade 4-12.

Depending on your town/city size, some classes can be as few as 10 students allowing each student to have a lot of individual attention. In a setting like band or chorus, it is the opposite. You can potentially be in a class with 100 plus kids. It allows students to govern themselves and learn the ability to lead and teach peers. In a high school setting, there are no "lessons" in the town I taught in. But every day there is 1 group that is assigned to a sectional … mon. clarinet, tues trumpet, wed. sax/bass thurs. percussion, fri. oboe/flute. the sectionals take place during my rehearsal time, but the students are set to a different location. Each group is assigned a section leader and are ranked by musical talent. there are usually 2 heads of section, 1 who can play amazingly and 1 who is very skilled at working with rhythms. This allows, the rhythm person to listen and pick out mistakes, and the "star" to be the example. It teaches leadership and allows the other students to both learn from some one their own age and strive to lead and improve their section and school community. Often times the kids learn best from someone who is not a staff member.

Many times budgets get cut and music is the first to go. This is disappointing, and hurts the students. Not all parents know music, so the kids often do not have the opportunity to sing or play an instrument at home or with a private teacher on the outside.

As far as listening to composers go- the different genres allow the individual to learn what they like and what they do not. I allow students to bring in their own pieces and we analyze them (listening for key signatures, instruments and patterns)- the kids go "Oh, this is the connection between all of the songs I like". It's almost the same concept of school itself- You are forced to do math, science, history, art and what not to se what you like and what you do not.

Hope this gives you a start and best of luck

I visited their site recently and I'm under the impression its more for classical vocal and just theatre by itself. Is there an actual music theatre programme? I like the oldies like the sound of music, evita, guys and dolls and all that but I'm also really into todays hit musicals like Spring Awakening, We Will Rock You and musicals with a pop rock score. Is Juliard the school for me?

Juilliard is NOT the place for what you seek. They also only accept less than 6 percent of the applicants WORLDWIDE. Try NYU, Hartt, and other schools. And try to spell them correctly when you apply – they like that.

I am thinking about starting up a pre school music class locally. Nothing too serious – just to make music available and fun for them. Has anyone ever started from scratch or already involved with this kind of class? Are there any legal implications as obvioulsy parents will be present so constant 1 to 1 supervision will be done. Would I have to be registered as a business as I would have to charge to cover certain costs? There is probably far more into it than I have ever thought and I would be very gratedful for all (sensible!) advice – either from experience or just your own ideas.
Thanks!
Thanks Katrina – although I am a stay at home mum I have kept my registration up as a teacher, so I have al the appropriate disclosure forms for that, but then this idea might involve a different disclosure, something I hadn't thought about.

Check out http://www.musikgarten.org This is a music curriculum for ages birth through 9 years. It is a great program, and you can purchase the materials without taking the training. However, the training (which I haven't don't yet) does also include some business practices.

Also, check out your local MTNA http://www.mtna.org/home.htm (that is, if you're in the states). Your local branch can give you some ideas about local laws/by-laws etc.

Here's a website with resources for teaching early childhood music http://www.giamusic.com/music_education/Early-Childhood.html I have some of these books and they're great!

I teach piano privately and in small groups in my home. Currently, I haven't purchased a business lisence for my studio, and I've been doing this for 17 years. Check with your local city hall, but also talk to some of the other music teachers in your area to find out what the norm is. I know that certain areas are more strict than others when it comes to this.

As far as what to charge for classes, try calling places like Gymboree etc to get a feel for the going rate. It ranges, depending on where you live, what you're offering. The range can be from $8/class to $15/class. Most of these types of classes are taught in a 10-15 week "session" with the average being 12 weeks. Parents usually pay for a set of lessons. For example, for a 12 week set of lessons at $10/class, you'd charge the parents $120.

And get that money up front! Make a lesson contract/agreement that outlines your policies about missed lessons etc and have the parents sign/read it before starting.

Good luck! This is a great idea
