If you have any questions, please check the plugin FAQ or contact us at the helpdesk.

If I want to major in music, do you think that they will give much consideration to the standardize test scores? Do they even consider the standardized test and GPA? Is Yale school of music hard to get in? Is it possible for me to transfer to other departments in my sophomore year?

The Yale School of Music takes only graduate students. There are undergraduate degrees awarded in the department of music, but those degrees are focused on music theory, not performance. The admissions procedure is the same as for any other subject in Yale College (the undergraduate division of Yale).

My score is 2100, with 800 in maths. But I'm afraid my reading score is too low for me to be considered in Harvard or Yale, or Stanford,or MIT
I have a GPA of 4.6 ( on 5). I'm also a member of my school editorial board and the students council. I've taken professional training in vocal music, and am into art, debating and atheletics. I've won several national scholarships a scholarship to study in singapore.
I'm actively involved with an NGO against child labour, and have participated in international conferences, where I represented my country, India. I've done several surveys in the villages, and have written an evaluation report for the NGO.
Would these extra-curriculars make up for my SAT-1? I'll be giving SAT-II, where I should get above 760.
Should I apply with my present resume, or should I wait and give my SAT-I again ? ( If I do, I'll have to give it in June, which might get too late. I also dont want my parents to spend double because I didn't get enough the first time
could you name some 'good' universities, where I stand a chance?

I don't think that it is impossible for you to get into an Ivy or one of the other elite schools such as Duke, Stanford or UChicago. Aslong as you keep in mind, many thousands of top students are applying to each of these schools, and they are rather small, each of them only enrolls about 1000 – 1600 freshmen each year. So, to a large extent, the admissions depend on factors beyond your control – how the people at the college want to balance the class between American and foreign students, or between techie or non techies, or male/female, etc

Each of the Ivys and the other elite schools has its own personality. A person who is perfect for Dartmouth is not a good fit at Brown or Columbia. A person who is a perfect fit at Duke is not well suited for UChicago. Columbia is in the heart of the city, Cornell is in the remote country in a small town.

I think you should definitely take a closer look at the other elite schools. You list mainly academic credentials so UChicago might be a great fit for you, but if you are really into Athletics then Stanford or Duke might be a better choice. Chicago, Harvard and Brown are probably more left wing. Stanford, Princeton and Dartmouth more right wing (but still not very right wing).

Another thing to consider is that there are many excellent schools in the next 100 of the US News rankings. Schools like Syracuse, Fordham, Tulane, Rochester, George Washington, BC, BU, Reed, and some of the state universities such as Virginia, UC Berkeley, Michigan. Not to mention, the excellent and highly respected small colleges such as Williams, Middlebury, Claremont, Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Davidson, Grinnell, etc

Do some more detailed research, keep a positive attitude and you will find a school that is a good match.

Good luck.

OK, so Im 13 and my parents are both super accomplished. My dad graduated from yale and did business school at dartmouth and is part of this big company and my mom got straight A’s in every class she ever took. Right now they’re all mad at me because I’m thinking about quitting baseball, which I’m not bad at. It was just that I realized that baseball became something that my dad forced me to do and i wasn’t having that much fun. My dad expects me to go pro or something, and when i fail, he blames it on the fact that I don’t practice all the time. On top of this, my parents are mad at me because my grades are A- B+ area. I’ve asked other people, and they say that A- B+ is really good, but my parents tell me that I’m gonna fail in life if i don’t get my grades up. My parents expect me to become great in something, but right now i only like listening to music, playing video games and playing with my rock band.

You know weather your parents are right or wrong, they love you and only want what is best for you. So forgive them for not seeing life through a 13 year olds eyes. Maybe you can go for a ride or go for an ice cream, play a board game or card game or do something together …not a movie!…..but where you can get their undivided attention so they can really listen and tell them you feel they will be disappointed in you if you don’t live up to THEIR dreams or expectations for you. Tell them you always want to make them proud of you but you will need to find your own niche in life and it will come with time and experiences.
It is important to know if something doesn’t work out, it is not necessiarly a failure but a learning experience where you simply learned this activity is not what you like to do so move on to something else. You should try your best when you do something but also not be stressed out about it. This leads to a feeling of failure and probably less motivation to try new adventures.
You have excellent role models in your parents so don’t blow them off. Just give them a big bear hug, tell them you love them and tell them you are Gods work in progress. You already have excellent insight into these issues so I bet you will be successful at the hard stuff, problem solving with your parents, so you will have a win-win solution. Good Luck.

Im in middleschool now and I want to get into Yale Music School or get a music scholarship. I play the guitar and a few other instruments. What requirements do I need to get into Yale? Please help =(

Extracurricular activities related to music, high GPA, a lot of money if you can't get a high GPA. You should be more concerned with learning as much as you can than about your grades, especially in middle school. Despite what the teachers and parents might tell you, nobody cares about your middle school grades.

You should probably consider why you want to go to Yale; the education you get there isn't inherently better than a non-ivy league school, you just make more business connections, making it more likely that you'll have a job right out of school. If your career goal is music, I'd go to a conservatory, instead of Yale's music branch.

I’m a senior student now, and my level of classes has always been the highest ones accessible at the respective grades. But during my sophomore and junior years, I had a lot of health problems and some lack of motivation, so I ended up with a D in English 3 Honors last year and total I have a rather unimpressive weighted GPA of about 3.7, and I’m ranked 102 out of a little over 600 in my class. Hopefully I can offset the GPA with my qualitative essays and recommendations, and I’m currently making up the credit for that D in night classes, though I’m not sure if that will actually overwrite my grade.

I’m currently taking AP Calculus BC, AP English 4, AP Economics (1st semester), AP Government (2nd semester), AP Biology, and AP Japanese 4. If I manage to get all A’s in these classes during the first semester, will colleges still consider them after I apply? I know admissions officers like to see improvement, but I’ve always heard this mentioned in the context of sophomore to junior year. Specifically, do colleges just throw out your report if the GPA doesn’t meet a certain requirement, giving you no chance even if you show tremendous improvement with the same level of classes during your senior year?

OTHER INFO:
Dream schools: Yale, Stanford
Target schools: UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Wisconsin Madison
Safe schools: as of yet undecided

I scored 2230 on the SAT, and I plan to submit three SAT-IIs that I have scored high 700s or 800 on. I scored 4 on AP World History, US History, and Chemistry. I scored 5 on AP Physics and Music Theory.
I am also a National Merit Semi-Finalist, if that helps at all, though I doubt it at this level of schools.
I'm a California resident.
Extracurriculars:
School tennis team (9-12)
2006 USTA Team Tennis Sectionals Finalist
I've played piano all my life, taking MTAC Certificate of Merit Advanced Level this year
Computer Club President (10-12)
Part-time Chinese/Japanese language tutor

Honestly? I don’t think you have a shot at Yale or Stanford. If you are a California resident, then the UCs are possible — but Berkeley or UCLA will be harder to get into than one of the other UCs, but are not out of the question. If you are a Wisconsin resident, then I think you have a great shot at UW.

If you are applying out of state, you still have a shot — but it will be harder.

Do well this year so you can improve your rank in class. Make sure that you have a killer admissions essay.

You will certainly get into some great schools. But I don’t see Ivy for you.

My SAT scores are 800 CR, 760 Math, and 730 Writing, and my SATII subject tests are 800 Math 2, 660 Biology (ouch), and 720 literature. I'm in almost all AP classes with good grades, and I do music and other extracurriculars.

So where should I go? I've applied to all those schools and haven't gotten any responses yet.

That was a pretty stupid question considering all you posted about yourself was test scores and grades and nothing about your personality.

Just go where you think you'll learn a lot and have a lot of fun and fit in well.

———————————————————————————————
this is some information for submit applications to school , but i don’t understand that sentence , they say , applications will be on line by sep.15 , but what does ‘by’ mean ? it means , “sep.15 ” is deadline ? or applicantions will be available from 15 ? it’s very very impotant thing ! so i find “by” word in my dictionary , there is , “indicating a deadline” is it true ? oh no.

Anyway , one ridiculous thing is , there are no applicantion on that site now , so I confused .

http://www.yale.edu/music/admissions.html

I suggest you to come in this page . and help me . i can’t find any application button or something .

It means they will have it up on or before September 15. It's a deadline they set for themselves, not for you.

You should have access to the application on 09/15/2008 (or after), but you might have access before that.

Check again in a few days. The button isn't there yet.
