What you need to watch out for when purchasing guitar lessons online

22nd October

If you want to learn to play guitar, there are great variety of resources online. Some are free, and some you need to pay for. Of course, if you’re paying then you can expect the quality to be much higher. The product quality will just be better.

So, what you need to look for when shopping around for guitar lessons online? Let’s discuss the three points of finding the best guitar lessons online.

First, you want to be on the lookout for well-designed and quality website. If you think the website looks bad, the product will probably be bad. Look for a site that is visually appealing. You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can get an idea of how committed to quality someone is by looking at their website.

Secondly, you want to research and read reviews of the product you’re looking for. One of the most popular online guitar lessons is Jamorama, and you can read a review of Jamorama here. If you can find some good honest guitar product reviews that rate a product highly, you’ve most likely found a product that you can count on.

The third thing to look for when trying to decide on which online guitar lesson to purchase is a moneyback guarantee. If they are not offering a moneyback guarantee, you’re not buying. The vast majority of the marketplace online is legitimate, but you do have to watch out for unethical websites. When a product offers you a 30 or 60 day guarantee, then you have zero risk. If you don’t like the product, all you have to do is remember to return the product in time.

After reading this article you should have a good idea of what to look for. I sincerely hope that you have more confidence in your ability to find the best guitar lesson online now. Now go pick the right course and be on your way to rock stardom!

Guide to Correct Guitar Positioning and Tuning

10th October

learn guitar

You are now about to learn about how to position a guitar and tune it in this simple guitar lesson.

First you will learn about positioning a guitar.  Start by sitting on an armless chair that will provide support for your back.  Your back should be resting comfortably against the back of the chair.  Slouching is not good because you will develop bad guitar habits and a sore back.  When sitting in an armless chair, be sure that there is a lot of room on both sides of you so you can hold your guitar properly and move your arms.

Once seated, place the guitar on your lap with the strings facing outward.  Check that the guitar body is on top of the leg that is farthest from the headstock.  If you are right handed, the guitar body should rest on your right leg.  The majority of acoustic guitars will have curved indentations that are great for playing the guitar on your leg.  If you are holding the guitar properly then the sixth string should be close to your chest and the first string should be close to your feet.

Your fret hand will have to be placed on the left if you are right handed and on the right if you are left handed.  You should grip the neck of the guitar gently with your fretting hand.  You thumb should be placed behind the guitar’s neck.  The other four fingers in front, are placed slightly bent, over the strings.  Bend your fingers naturally when pressing the strings unless the instructor tells you otherwise.

Next we are going to discuss guitar picking techniques.  Playing a guitar will be much easier with the use of a guitar pick.  The guitar pick or a plectrum, is a small flat tool, designed to strum a guitar.  Picks are relatively cheap so you can buy a few at a time to keep handy.  There are different types of guitar picks but it is best to start with one that is not too hard or too flimsy.  Picks are made of various materials, including, rubber, plastic, wood, metal, tortoiseshell, and stone.  The common pick is in the shape of a triangle but some also come in other shapes.

Once you have a guitar pick and are seated in the proper position, you can begin strumming the guitar.

The hand holding the pick will be nearest the bridge of the guitar.  You should open up the hand you will be picking or “strumming” the guitar with.  The palm should face you.  Next, place the thumb on top of the bent index finger. Twist your wrist a little to point the knuckle of the thumb towards you.  Carefully slide the guitar pick between your index finger and thumb, using your other hand.  That way, the pick is secure. It should end just right behind your thumb’s knuckle.

The pick should be held firmly, with about ½ inch sticking out of your fingers and the pointed part, pointing away from your fist.  The hand you are strumming with should be over the sound hole if you are using an acoustic guitar or over the guitar body if you are using an electric guitar.  Your strumming hand should be placed above the strings.

Your picking hand should not sit on the body or stings of the guitar.  Using your wrist, not your arm, strum the lowest string downward.  If the string clatters too loudly, try to strum a little more gently.  Then strum it again, this time, upwards.

Try this a few times.  With the minimum of movements, do short pick upwards and downwards. Now try repeating this process with the rest of the strings.

Remember that holding the pick will feel strange at first.  You will have to concentrate on your picking hand when you begin practicing the guitar.  Your downstrokes and your upstrokes should sound the same.  Expect likewise, to sound unpolished at first. You will, of course, improve with practice.  Just be patient and you might turn out to be the next guitar superstar!

Three Mistakes Beginners Make when Learning Guitar

8th October

There’s been a surge of people learning to play the guitar at home over the past ten years. Fueled by baby boomers with more time, less expensive instruments and of course the Internet. Learning to play guitar is easier then ever and teaching it to yourself has become the new trend.

If you don’t use a quality dvd guitar lessons or online video you risk making some mistakes while learning that will be more difficult to correct down the road. In the rest of this post I’ll share with you the 3 most frequent errors I see beginners make when first learning guitar. So if you’re a beginner or have been teaching yourself pay close attention, if you’re making or have made any of these mistakes now is the time to fix them.

Correct Left Hand Positioning

I often see guitar players with their thumb coming way up over the neck of the guitar. Beginner guitar players should learn proper form and positioning right from the start. If you get off on the wrong foot making mistakes and picking up bad habits it’s a lot harder to fix later. Having your thumb on the back of the neck and your wrist caulked correctly ensures you can have fast action and maximum stretch from your fingers when changing chords or picking.

Using the Tips of your Fingers

Along with improper hand positioning comes using the fleshy part of your finger tip on the frets rather then just the tip. Why is this important? As you advance to become an intermediate guitar player you’re going to be making more complex chords. By not using tips of your fingers others strings around the fret your on will be blunted and the sound muffled when strumming or picking.

Notes on the Neck

This last mistake is usually over looked because it’s boring and beginners don’t see any benefit to learning it. Understanding scales and knowing the notes on each string is the first step to becoming an awesome guitar player. Any one who wants to learn guitar should learn this first, this is the skill that will help you become a great guitar player. All great lead guitar players know their way around the guitar neck and every note on each string like the back of their hand.

If you find yourself making any of these beginner mistakes take action to try and change them now. Learning the correct way is much easier now then trying to undo bad habits in several years.

Do You Want to Play Guitar Songs? – Then Read On!

28th September

Prior to making any attempt to play guitar songs, you need to make sure your guitar is tuned correctly. If your guitar is not tuned as it should be you will soon discover that the song you are trying to play will sound absolutely nothing like it should. On top of this, you need to know how to read guitar tabs before you can play guitar songs too.

Once you have tuned in your guitar and know how to read guitar tabs, you will need to train your ear when listening to a song in order to be able to play guitar songs. Listen to simple songs to begin with, preferably those songs consisting of three simple chords.

While listening to the song, you want to try to pay attention to the rhythm and the timing of the chords and strums being played on the guitar. After you just listen to the song a few times, then you should try to follow along with the song by reading the guitar tab, while it is playing. You should do this a few times as well, making mental note of the rhythm and timing.

When you have heard the song a few times and followed along on the guitar tab, it is time to take up your own guitar and strum along with the song as it is playing. Remember to play your guitar softly so you can still hear the music you are trying to copy in the background.

Finally, once you get the timing and the strumming style, start playing the songs on your own, this time without the music. In case you have forgotten, you can listen to the song again then try playing it on your own. Practice playing a song on your guitar one at a time. You must master one song before you go to another. Play the song over and over again until you are able to sing the song while you play your guitar.

It’s a great idea to record yourself playing if you can. This affords you the luxury of being able to watch the playback of your performance and correct any mistakes you are making in your technique.

Learning to play guitar songs isn’t as hard as you think it is. You just need to have the passion to learn. You must also have a great deal of patience. If you mess up a lot, don’t worry about it. That’s natural. If you keep making a mistake then put the guitar down for a while and go do something else then come back. When you’re frustrated, you’re only going to keep making mistakes.
